Fete du Citron (Menton, France)

This is a great alternative for celebrating carneval.
It is very special and fascinating what you can do with oranges and lemons.

Every year during the carneval time parts of Menton turn into a small garden eden; always with a different theme. There were themes as Cinecitta, Great Civilisations, Jules Verne, etc.
In 2011 the motto was the great civilisations of the world, so that one could encounter Egypt, Rome, Mayans ...
There have been festivities in Menton similar to the one in Nice in the 19th century. Mainly as an attraction for the visitors/tourists spendin the winter months there.
Today's Fete du Citron has its roots in 1928 when an exhibition of flowers and citrus fruits was Setup in a hotel garden in Menton. The idea originated from the fact the region being one of the biggest producers of citrus fruits during that time. In 1935 the festival as we know it today started.

There are different attractions to visit:
the garden of lights, day and night parades, orchid festival, arts & crafts shows
There is dancing, celebrating ... in a different way.

It's also nice that it there are many French and fewer foreign visitors. This gives the whole festival a special flair.

Tips:
  • You can combine the famous carneval in Nice with ist flower Parade
  • As it is basically low season for the Cote d'Azur you can get good hotel prices in Monaco; especially as there is no carneval hype.
Advantage: there is a direct train from Monte Carlo to Menton

Practical Tips:
  • Don't go to Menton for the festivities by car (very crowded)
  • Do book tickets in advance
  • We didn't have a seat for the Menton Parade; but you should consider it (especially for Nice, which is much bigger).
