Where to eat in the greater Zurich area (Zurich, Switzerland)

Zurich offers so many good and some great restaurants; sometimes it is really hard to pick.
There are places for every taste.

I'll start with a list of restaurants I like and will categorize them. The list will develop over time. The order is generated randomly and does not allow to draw conclusions on quality, etc.

At the beginning of each restaurant review I'll try to classify them with respect to different categories.
Furthermore I will consider the aspects Food / Service / Atmosphere in my posts and provide some pics (in case I don't have my own pics I'll post some official ones).

Hopefully you'll find a good place for yourself. If you have any suggestions, please write back.

Haute Cuisine

20/20 by Mövenpick Wine  (Zurich)

The cozy atmosphere is especially nice during winter. If you choose to go during the summer months that won't be a problem as they have good air conditioning. We usually have the seasonal degustation menu with corresponding wines. Therefore we let the staff pamper us for several hours :-)

Though I already heard some people complaining I have to say that service was always very helpful, the menus consisted of interesting combinations of seasonal food and the wines were perfectly co-ordinated.

Here are some pictures and the menu path (only in German) from our last visit (Apr 2016):

Positive:
  • cental location
  • great wines
  • delicious Food
  • friendly an professional staff

Negative:
  • quite expensive
  • restaurant has no terrace (for good weather)

Vegetarian

Hiltl  (Zurich)

Hiltl was founded in 1898 and is Europe's first vegetarian restaurant. The specialty is freshness, with daily purchased fresh ingredients. Hiltl is famous for its lunchtime vegetarian buffet, featuring some 50 homemade salads and hot dishes, and also an Indian buffet in the evening. Breakfasts are also very popular. The full bar mixes fresh fruit juice cocktails, and offers a wide choice of Swiss and international wines.

I was there several times for a quick lunch, a drink and also dinner. It's always very tasty, although somehow crowded. That's why I wouldn't go there to have a relaxing mea.

Positive:
  • central location
  • vegetarian Food
  • large variety

Negative:
  • quite noisy
  • quite expensive (but somehow normal in Zurich)

Traditional Swiss /  Brewery House

Zeughauskeller  (Zurich)

Originally an old armoury (Zeughaus) on the Paradeplatz in the heart of Zurich, converted into a beer restaurant in 1927, retaining its original columns and wooden beamed ceiling. The Zeughauskeller is now famous locally and internationally for its fine, traditional Swiss cooking. Dishes are often based on old recipes, including the fresh Sausages, whole Pork Shank, and Zürich Geschnetzeltes. Large table seating contributes to a sociable atmosphere, where conversations turn strangers into new acquaintances.

I go there from time to time (every season). Friends and even Business Partners like the place to grab a bite and have a (couple) of after-work Drinks.
It's not the place to go for a good and nice dinner, but for a relaxed and atmospheric evening. It reminds me very much of the traditional brewery houses in Bavaria and other countries.

Positive:
  • very central
  • variety of beer
  • sociable atmosphere
  • good for having a drink, plain cooking or small dishes

Negative:
  • Crowded
  • Food is nothing secial but ok (plain cooking)

Mediterranean Cuisine

Giesserei (Zurich, Oerlikon)

The Restaurant combines post-industrial design with romantic fireplaces and candle light. This gives this special place in Zurich-Oerlikon a very unique atmosphere.

Claude Trefzer is an awarded Chef with 12 points Gault Millaut. He offers daily changing menus with seasonal food, focusing on the Mediterranean kitchens of Europe. An international list of wines complements the menu.

I've been to the Giesserei on three occasions: for a banquet with apero on the terrace and twice for lunch.
It was always different and very good.
